From Mansions to Dwellings

By Jon Hood

In John 14:2, the Greek monai means dwelling places or rooms. The King James Version's “mansions” reflects an older English meaning of a dwelling. Today, the word suggests a grand house, which the Greek does not specify. See the UBS translation commentary.

OpenPsalm is updating some song lyrics to reflect this meaning more accurately. Updated verses are selected by default; older versions are removed from the default selection but remain available to select manually. These updated verses are only used when the original lyricist appears to have misunderstood the archaic translation. If the song mentions mansions but can be spiritualized in a way that reflects the archaic definition, the lyrics are left alone and a note is added to the commentary.
