Charles Wesley published this hymn in 1739 in Hymns and Sacred Poems, and it has become one of the most widely sung Easter hymns in the English language. The tune EASTER HYMN first appeared anonymously in Lyra Davidica (1708), where each line of text is answered by a soaring 'Alleluia' melisma.
